What Do I Need?
The basic requirements to keep Discus fish is to have the following:
- Aquarium (with cover and light)
- Efficient Filter
- Air-pump (with air stone)
- Water Conditioner
- Starter Bacteria
- Trace Minerals
- Stendker GoodHeart Food
- Aquarium Sand
For a group of Discus the recommended volume is 350 liters or more with an efficient filter, air stone, and temperature set at 29-30 celsius. A water conditioner is important to dechlorinate when introducing new tap water during weekly water changes (25-50%) and to dose trace minerals for better conditions.
Starter Bacteria is required during the first 4 to 6 weeks to protect the aquarium until your new filter is mature enough and your parameters have stabilised, you may also need to increase water changes during the first few weeks to remove toxins which develop while the aquarium cycles during its first stage. Aquarium sand helps with developing beneficial bacteria in an aquarium which also gives you the option to add suitable hardy plants to create a more attractive environment, you can check our recommended plants and layout materials at the bottom of this page.
