The very attractive Black-Banded Leporinus is a large growing algae eater that is well suited with other big community fish, it is very active and should be kept in large aquariums (this fish is not suited for small tanks or with small species). Keep the aquarium covered as the Black-Banded Leporinus are very good jumpers with an ability to jump long distances.
This fish does best with sand combined with pieces of wood and rocks, it also does well in large planted aquariums if the plants can withstand their high activity (keeping in mind it can reach up to 30 cm). As long as there is algae growing on the wood and rocks, the Black-Banded Leporinus will spend most of its time grazing. If there is no algae, it will nibble on the shoots and leaves of plants.
Due to its high energy and large size, we do not recommend this fish with our Stendker discus fish as it can cause them to panic in the dark and possibly get spooked and hit the aquarium's glass panels which is dangerous. If kept in a smaller aquascape, a plan must be considered to move this fish to a larger enclosure in the future to accommodate their big size.
