This North-American species of ray-finned fish in the genus Notropis has translucent color from pink to golden with a silver-black stripe along its flanks. The base of its fins are of a reddish color.
Rainbow shiners is an active shoaling fish, peaceful and can be kept with other fish that don't mind the same environment. This fish loses its coloration in transport and requires time and a stable environment for it to regain over a period of several weeks.
